Roots

Many years ago a TV Mini Series called “Roots” by Alex Haley took the Airwaves by storm.  Alex Haley wrote a book tracing his family tree back through slavery in America to African Tribe called The Mandinca Tribe.   It was a wonderful TV series and many people began to trace their “Roots” after seeing this show.

I attempted to trace some of my family tree, but all of my grandparents are dead along with my Father so I did not get very far.  This is what I do know:

On my Fathers side:

My father was – English, French Canadian, German and Dutch.

My Grandfather Cole was- English and French Canadian, He was born in England and then they moved to Canada.  He use to tell that one of my ancestors was a French Pirate whether that is true or not, I do not know.

My Grandmother Leatherman-Cole was German and Dutch – Her parents came here from Germany.  I found out that the name “Leatherman” is Jewish and that the Lord revealed to me that my great-grandfather was Jewish.  But since all are dead I have no way of proving my Jewish descent.

On My Mothers side:

Both Grandfather and Grandmother O’Bradovic were Croatians – 100%.   If you asked my Grandfather where his parents would come from, he would laugh and say in his broken English, “They were Gypsies”.

My husband Scott is also German and Czech and possibly has Jewish Roots in his family tree on his mothers side, but she also passed away when he was 16 and has no other contacts to confirm this.   A Jewish believer once told him that the Lord revealed to him that there was Jewish descent in my husband, but again this cannot be proven.

So as you can see our family “Roots” is very much European and Mediterranean.  Little did I know that the Lord would soon reveal to me another “Root” – “My Jewish Roots in Messiah”

Gen 15:1-6 (ASV)

1 After these things the word of Jehovah came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

2 And Abram said, O Lord Jehovah, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?

3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

4 And, behold, the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying, This man shall not be thine heir; But he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and number the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

6 And he believed in Jehovah; and he reckoned it to him for righteousness.

 Gal 3:28-29 (ASV)

28 There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there can be neither bond nor free, there can be no male and female; for ye all are one man in Christ Jesus.

29 And if ye are Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, heirs according to promise.

Romans 11:17-24 (RSV)

17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place to share the richness of the olive tree,

18 do not boast over the branches. If you do boast, remember it is not you that support the root, but the root that supports you.

19 You will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in."

20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast only through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe.

21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.

22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.

23 And even the others, if they do not persist in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again.

24 For if you have been cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree.

My Return to My Jewish Roots

I guess the best place to start e is to share with you how I returned  to my Jewish Roots.  As a child I always had a love for G-d and his word, that love was nurtured by my grandmother who was a Seventh Day Adventist and a devout follower of Yeshua.     When I was a child and we would visit my grandmother’s house I always sensed the presence of G-d there, especially on the Sabbath.

My grandmother honored the Sabbath faithfully.   She made preparations for it weekly, and when that Sun went down on Friday night, the TV set and everything else was shut down and prayer began, and if you were a guest in her house you were expected to honor the Sabbath.   On Saturday we would go to Church, (back then there were no Messianic Jewish Congregations), and when we got home, it would be a day of spending time in the word, worshipping G-d at my grandmothers piano (my grandmother never had a piano lesson in her life, she played by ear), and resting in G-ds presence.

Of course as a child, I would have much rather been playing outside, but when you were at Grandmas you honored the Sabbath and there was no argument, the fourth Commandment would be honored in her house!

Ex 20:8-11 (ASV)

8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;

10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath unto Jehovah thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 for in six days Jehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore Jehovah blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

As a child, G-ds hand was upon my life, and I knew He had called me to ministry even back then, but it would not be an easy road with many trials and heartbreak along the way.

I loved studying the Word and the most precious gift I ever received from my Grandmother was a beautiful White Bible.    However the camps were divided in my family.   My dad was brought up Seventh Day Adventist, but my mother was Catholic, neither however practiced their faith.   My father did repent and accept Yeshua/Jesus as his Lord and Savior before he died and is in Heaven now.   They eventually divorced, but I still had the influence of my godly Grandmother who prayed for me and influenced me and was an anchor in my soon to be turbulent years to come.

One day I told my mother that I wanted to be a Seventh Day Adventist and not a Catholic, well that did not sit very well with my mother.   Even though she was not a practicing Catholic, this infuriated her that I would not want to be a Catholic!   They proceeded to take my Bible away from me and threatened to kick me out if I spoke of this again.   I was only 13 at the time and was crushed and confused, why wouldn’t my mother be happy that I wanted to serve the Lord?

I told my Grandmother this and in her wisdom she said “Honey, G-d knows your heart and one day you will be able to serve Him and nobody will be able to stop you”.

When she passed away and went to be with Yeshua, I felt my anchor had been cut off.   Soon a spirit of rebellion set in and I would be living a lifestyle that was full of drugs, sex and unhappiness.    As a child I was sexually molested by a stranger, my parents divorce along with my Grandmothers death left a great scar on the inside of me.   But my G-d was ever watching over me and the prayers of my Grandmother.

Rev 5:8 (ASV)

8 And when he had taken the book, the four living creatures and the four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having each one a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

Even though my Grandmother was in Heaven, her prayers were still at work.

At the age of 22 I  rededicated my life to the Lord, was filled with the Holy Spirit and have been serving the Lord ever since for over 25 years.  My grandmother’s words came to pass, God saw my heart and through it all, I am now serving Him in Ministry.

I have been a diligent student of the Word, went to Bible Collage and was involved in all areas of ministry which included teaching, prison ministry, singles ministry, street evangelism and even a short Radio Program.

I have a very strong anointing and call to teach the Word, and I love teaching the Word, however something was missing from my Christian experience and I could not put my finger on it.     I began to teach a class on the book of Revelation, it was during this class that the Holy Spirit began to reveal the missing link to my Christian walk.

I loved Yeshua/Jesus with all of my heart, but I was loosing touch with Him, I could not relate to the Greco/Roman version of Jesus that the Church taught.    I have always had a love in my heart for Israel and the Jews and identified with them, but the Church, nor Bible Collage ever linked Judaism with Christianity, they were two separate entities, only Replacement Theology was taught (that the Church had replaced Israel), which I knew was wrong!

It always seemed to me that when a Jewish person became a believer in Messiah that they knew more, even as new believers in Messiah then Gentile believers, and had a much greater grasp of the Whole Word of G-d, the Covenants and the Torah.  Then it dawned on me, of course they would, because they were taught to respect and learn the Torah as a child, where those of us who came from non-Jewish homes, were taught that the Old Testament/Tenach was not for us today, that it had some good stories, but it only pertained to Israel and when we became believers in Yeshua, we did not have that same foundation of Torah.

No wonder our foundation to begin with was more like sand because we did not have the Rock of Torah as our foundation!   Where as the Jewish person had the firm  Rock foundation of the Torah, and when they became a believer they had a greater understanding of the teachings of Messiah Yeshua  and the writers of the Brit Hadasha/ The New Testament because Yeshua  and the Apostles always taught in line with the Torah.

Then as I began to search and pray the Holy Spirit led me to a wonderful Website, The Hebraic Heritage Network, that was were I found what was missing, MY JEWISH ROOTS!   I soon discovered the beauty of the Torah and have Taken Hold of my Hebraic Heritage.   I have come to know Yeshua in even a greater and more intimate way then before as my Jewish Messiah!

Christianity is Jewish

The early Messianic  Jewish Believers were called “Nazarenes” it was not until Acts 11:19-26 that the Gentile Messianic Believers at Antioch in Syria were called “Christians”.  The early Messianic Believers were very much part of the Jewish lifestyle and faith.  In fact 1st Century “Nazarenes”were  really another sect of Judaism!  Yeshua was Jewish, The Disciples were Jewish, 1 million or more of the New Testament Congregation of Believers were Jewish, the Brit Hadasha is a Jewish Book!

The Holy Spirit was imparted during the “Feast of Pentecost” a Jewish Feast!  Read Acts 2 and 7, these believers were all Jewish, they were assembled in Jerusalem for the “Feast of Pentecost” and it was during that Feast that Yeshua sent the Holy Spirit.

In the past 2 years of studying the Jewish Roots of our faith I have found completeness in my relationship with Yeshua, the Land, the Torah and the People of Israel.    My husband and son have also come to love our new Messianic Lifestyle.

If we are to live as Yeshua lived, then we need to follow in His footsteps.     He was a Torah observant Jew, He grew up in a Jewish home, was raised by Jewish parents, studied and taught in the synagogues and correctly taught the Torah to His people.   He is the Jewish Lamb of G-d, our Passover Lamb.   As believers He has written the Torah in our hearts so we may follow after it as His Holy set apart children.

His Parents were devout Jews:

Luke 2:41-42 (ASV)

41 And his parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover.

42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up after the custom of the feast;

He was dedicated as a child in the Jewish custom:

Luke 2:21-24 (ASV)

21 And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called JESUS/YESHUA, which was so called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

22 And when the days of their purification according to the Law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord

23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord),

24 and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

As a child Yeshua/Jesus knew the importance of The Torah:

  Luke 2:43-49 (ASV)

43 and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy  Yeshua/Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not;

44 but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day's journey; and they sought for him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance:

45 and when they found him not, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking for him.

46 And it came to pass, after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them, and asking them questions:

47 and all that heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

48 And when they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I sought thee sorrowing.

49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? knew ye not that I must be in my Father's house?

Yeshua/Jesus as a Rabbi taught in the Synagogues:

  John 18:20 (ASV)

20 Jesus/Yeshua answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I ever taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and in secret spake I nothing.

Matt 4:23-25 (ASV)

23 And Jesus/Yeshua went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness among the people.

24 And the report of him went forth into all Syria: and they brought unto him all that were sick, holden with divers diseases and torments, possessed with demons, and epileptic, and palsied; and he healed them.

25 And there followed him great multitudes from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judaea and from beyond the Jordan.

He upheld the Torah and the prophets:

Matt 5:17-18 (ASV)

17 Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished.

The Lord is doing a awesome thing in these last days/Acharet Hayamin by bringing restoration of our Hebraic Heritage back Christianity.

In the past 1800 years, the Church has tried to make Christianity conform to a lifestyle of pagan traditions, Christmas and Easter and making them Christian Holidays instead of celebrating the Feasts of Israel( beginning with Constantine in Rome) and Gentile ways instead of conforming to the Torah, as Yeshua taught us to do.  The devil has tried to keep us from our Hebraic Heritage these past 1800 years, because He knew if we ever Took Hold of the Torah as Messiahs Body, that there would be such a revival among the Jews and the Nations that would shake the foundations of this World!

Beginning with the Reformation, the Church has slowly been returning to her roots, and now through the Holy Spirit, the Congregation of Messiah is taking back what the devil has stolen, her Hebraic Heritag. Anti-Semitism, Anti-Judaism and Judeophopia is being replaced with a new love of the Jewish people and our Jewish Heritage in Yeshua Ha Mashiach!

In the past 50 years there has been the Restoration of Israel, Healing Revival, a return to walking by faith and the Authority of the Word of God.    Healing, deliverance, prosperity, peace/Shalom all have their roots in Judaism,  these blessings are found in the Covenants of Israel which are in the Torah.

The Blessings of Obedience to the Torah:

  Deut 28:1-14 (ASV)

1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of Jehovah thy God, to observe to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that Jehovah thy God will set thee on high above all the nations of the earth:

2 and all these blessings shall come upon thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of Jehovah thy God.

3 Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.

4 Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy beasts, the increase of thy cattle, and the young of thy flock.

5 Blessed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough.

6 Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

7 Jehovah will cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thee: they shall come out against thee one way, and shall flee before thee seven ways.

8 Jehovah will command the blessing upon thee in thy barns, and in all that thou puttest thy hand unto; and he will bless thee in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee.

9 Jehovah will establish thee for a holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee; if thou shalt keep the commandments of Jehovah thy God, and walk in his ways.

10 And all the peoples of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of Jehovah; and they shall be afraid of thee.

11 And Jehovah will make thee plenteous for good, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land which Jehovah sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

12 Jehovah will open unto thee his good treasure the heavens, to give the rain of thy land in its season, and to bless all the work of thy hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

13 And Jehovah will make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if thou shalt hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them,

14 and shalt not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

In these final hours G-d is restoring the Body of Messiah back to their Jewish Heritage!   It is a soverigne move of the Holy Spirit all over the World that I believe is going to usher in the Last End Time revival and the Return of Our Messiah,  Yeshua Ha Adonai!

The Sabbath was not a strange thing to me, because I learned about it as a child and I knew in my heart that we needed to return to honoring the Sabbath and walking in the Torah.  For some , it will be a daily learning experience, but it will be a journey of joy and discovery as we learn the joy of living a truly Biblical Hebraic lifestyle!

We need to Take Hold of our Messianic Jewish brothers and sisters and learn about our rich Jewish Heritage from them!    We need to study the Bible through Hebraic eyes, and with Hebraic thinking.  For to long the Christianity has tried to look at the Bible through Greco/Roman teaching instead of through Hebraic teaching and in doing so have been robbed of their rich inheritance in Messiah.   Our minds need to be renewed to Hebraic thought in order to partake of the richness of the Olive Tree Root.

As John Garr has said “ To be truly Biblical is to think and act Hebraically, as Yeshua/Jesus did during his incarnation.”

I would like to quote John Garr from his book “Our Lost Legacy”[1] p. 39 he says:

“God certainly did not give the axe to Judaism and raise up a new religion called Christianity.  He

merely brought the Reformer into the world to bring perfection to the Jewish faith and to extend that

faith to all mankind.  The faith of the first century church was Judaism, perfected by a new covenant

a Judeo-Christianity as it were.  The earliest church was altogether a part of the community of

Judaism and made no attempt to break away from Judaism until after the passing of its first

Generation of leaders, the leaders established by Jesus, himself.

What is called Christianity today is the product of two millennia of tradition and attempts to

reconcile the faith of the Bible with the religions and philosophies of the Gentiles.  History offers

abundant confirmation of this fact.  Christianity was gradually divorced from biblical Judaism

and in the process both Jewish and Gentile believers were denied their heritage in Judaism.

In truth, God’s counsel is immutable (and we have his Word that it is) then we must conclude that

the division between Judaism and Christianity today is man made.  Two religions that spring from

the same source must be the same if there is not outside interference.  It was and is not God’s

Intention for Judaism and Christianity to be different from one another or to define themselves

Vis-à-vis one another rather than in the context of one another.  Human tradition and hardened

hearts have parted the ways between these two great faiths, for God is not the author of

confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33).  And, there is at least as much, if not more, responsibility for

this debacle upon the church than there is on Israel and Judaism”

Biblical Judaism is grounded in the Torah, the written Word of God.  We have a great Treasure in our Hebraic Roots.  But like any Treasure it must be found, dug up and held as precious as valuable in our life.

Our Jewish Roots in Messiah are a Treasure

  Matt 6:21 (ASV)

21 for where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also.

  2 Cor 4:7 (ASV)

7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves;

 Psalms 119:11 (ASV)

11 Thy word have I laid up in my heart, That I might not sin against thee.

  Prov 7:1-5 (ASV)

1 My son, keep my words, And lay up my commandments with thee.

2 Keep my commandments and live; And my law as the apple of thine eye.

3 Bind them upon thy fingers; Write them upon the tablet of thy heart.

4 Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; And call understanding thy kinswoman:

5 That they may keep thee from the strange woman, From he foreigner that flattereth with her words.

The Torah and our Jewish Heritage is a great Treasure.

The Torah  is meant to be G-ds instruction for us, a protector in a world full of darkness.

To say that since we are free in Messiah and are no longer under the  Law/Torah/God’s Instructions is  a statement made in Biblical ignorance of the Word.   Let me illustrate it this way:

Suppose you lived your whole life under Communism, you had no freedom, were oppressed and held in bondage.   Then you were set free and allowed to come to America, The Land of Freedom and Opportunity.    Does this mean, because you are now living in the land of  freedom you do not have to abide or live under the laws of the land?  NO!  The laws were given to protect our freedom and the freedom of others, without laws to  protect us there would be total mayhem and chaos.   The same is with our lives as believers.  We were delivered from the yoke of bondage, from Egypt and brought to the promised land of Freedom in Messiah, but we still need Gods Torah/instructions so we may learn to live as a holy set apart community In Him in Shalom with one another.   The Word of God, His Torah, was given to His people to protect them from the evil and pagen influences that they were surrounded by, and in today’s society we need His Torah today more then ever!

Read Psalm 119 – it is a beautiful Psalm about the importance of the Torah in our life.    The Torah is the first five books of Moses, but also includes the whole word of God from Genesis to Revelation.  You can not truly grasp everything Yeshua, Paul and the other writers of the Brit Hadasha wrote, without a firm foundation of the Torah.

Yeshua is the The Torah/The Living Word – We must receive His Torah with Gladness and  be rooted and grounded in it!

  Mark 4:1-20 (ASV)

1 And again he began to teach by the sea side. And there is gathered unto him a very great multitude, so that he entered into a boat, and sat in the sea; and all the multitude were by the sea on the land.

2 And he taught them many things in parables, and said unto them in his teaching,

3 Hearken: Behold, the sower went forth to sow:

4 and it came to pass, as he sowed, some seed fell by the way side, and the birds came and devoured it.

5 And other fell on the rocky ground, where it had not much earth; and straightway it sprang up, because it had no deepness of earth:

6 and when the sun was risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.

7 And other fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.

8 And others fell into the good ground, and yielded fruit, growing up and increasing; and brought forth, thirtyfold, and sixtyfold, and a hundredfold.

9 And he said, Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parables.

11 And he said unto them, Unto you is given the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all things are done in parables:

12 that seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest haply they should turn again, and it should be forgiven them.

13 And he saith unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how shall ye know all the parables?

14 The sower soweth the word.

15 And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; and when they have heard, straightway cometh Satan, and taketh away the word which hath been sown in them.

16 And these in like manner are they that are sown upon the rocky places, who, when they have heard the word, straightway receive it with joy;

17 and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway they stumble.

18 And others are they that are sown among the thorns; these are they that have heard the word,

19 and the cares of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

20 And those are they that were sown upon the good ground; such as hear the word, and accept it, and bear fruit, thirtyfold, and sixtyfold, and a hundredfold.

  Matt 7:24-29 (ASV)

24 Every one therefore that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, shall be likened unto a wise man, who built his house upon the rock:

25 and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and if fell not: for it was founded upon the rock.

26 And every one that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand:

27 and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall thereof.

28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these words, the multitudes were astonished at his teaching:

29 for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

  John 1:1-4 (ASV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made through him; and without him was not anything made that hath been made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Whenever Yeshua/Jesus or the writers of the Brit HaDasha referred to the Word, it was the Tenakh  that they were referring to.  There were no other Scripture besides Tenakh, Tenakh stands for The Torah, The Prophets  and the Writtings.

The Brit HaDasha is really our instructions as Believers how we are now to walk in accordance with the Torah of Israel as His Redeemed people!

The Torah has been written in our hearts as Messianic Believers, there are over 1050 commands in the New Testament that we are to live by as believers in Messiah and they are all based on the Torah.

The Torah shows us how to walk as a Holy Redeemed, set apart community of Believers in Messiah Yeshua under the Renewed/New Covenant !

The Ruach HaKodesh is calling the Body to return to their Biblical Roots  which are found in Messianic Judaism.   Come and Take Hold of His garment – The Torah and your Hebraic Heritage.    Learn about the The Feasts of Messiah, The Shabbot/Sabbath and The Symbols of Our Faith!
